One of my favorite parts of vacation is that it allows you to step back and plan, fully seeing the vast horizon, for the coming months (or years) in your life. On a recent weekend camping trip with our friends to Hendy Woods and Mendocino, I spent the time in the car writing and prioritizing our endless project list (in truth I don’t write, but paint my lists). The items were categorized based on cost, time involved, and how critical (versus just want) they were.
The top of the list were restocking firewood and rebuilding the retaining wall above our garage (sexy, I know). Mentioning this to our friends camping with us, they volunteered a pile of dry wood that simply needed to be hoarded and transported from their grandma’s yard in Palo Alto. So venture we did, and like good little squirrels, got ready for winter. After building a separate rack for the kindling, we neatly stacked the wood, chopping down to size along the way and performing general maintenance of our wood area.

There were only a couple of mishaps along the way, including a very bad bashing of my head into the low rafter of our wood shelter. My head is so sensitive and bruised that I woke today with a pounding headache and a little disorientation. Hubby-the-paramedic says if it’s a concussion there’s nothing I can do except for not to hit it again. If only I’d known I’d need my new helmet for this I would have put it on!
But other than a little pain, we’re feeling very accomplished and a little more ’set’ for winter. This weekend we’ll harvest (recycle?) a few more down logs from my dad’s place and check this project off the list.
I’m very impressed, squirrel! I completely agree about vacations being good for planning. Hope your head is all better very soon.

Jeez I was worried about you getting hurt on the highway not bashing
your head on a rafter. Looks like you all worked hard. I guess now you
need a construction helmet also. You will enjoy this winter. I received
your beautiful thank you today. Have it setting where I can see it!
I am waiting for a photo! love both of you
