As we enter November and officially begin Holiday Rush 2006, I am considering the months ahead and all of the activities to ensue.
The last classic event to take place each year is the implementation of New Year’s Resolutions. I know most people forget about their assured resolve as soon as the champagne is out of their system, but I take these things seriously (what, you’re surprised?).
So I pulled out last year’s list (which has been posted on my desk all year) to see where I stand.
Here were my 10 resolutions:
1. At least one night hike-in camping. (Check–sort of)
2. Take 3 week progressive climbing technique class and break through 5.10a (Check)
3. Climb outside (at least) once. (Hmm…quit climbing after moving away from gym. Tough to fulfill.)
4. Read one book per month (1/2 check. I’ve read 4.5 books so far this year.)
5. Create property insurance inventory video. (No progress to date)
6. Assess and implement long term retirement planning. (Check! Woo hoo!)
7. Create a disaster preparedness kit. (Not completed, but I have the shopping list from FEMA.)
8. Help Mike organize the garage. (What’s funny about this is that I wrote it for our old house, but it’s still true and still not done.)
9. Let my Pisces spirit shine through more often. (You be the judge.)
10. Be in the moment. (Actually, one of my books from item #4 has really helped with this. Yay Buddism.)
So I accomplished about half of what I set out to do this year. I think that’s pretty good considering my lofty self-expectations. What’s also not noted is all of the other BIG things that happened this year, like buying and selling a house, getting a promotion, and adopting Bella. Plus you can see how my focus on climbing in 2005 shifted to biking in 2006. Unexpected distractions and financial expectations, to say the least, but progressions that brought me deep satisfaction and joy. And progress is what it’s all about.
